Howard County Central Booking Overview
Howard County Central Booking is a distinct booking and intake function on the same Corrections campus as the Detention Center. The county says it opened in March 2005, when booking responsibility moved from the Police Department to the Department of Corrections. The facility receives incoming adult arrestees and juveniles waived to adult jurisdiction from several agencies, including Howard County Police, Maryland State Police, Department of Natural Resources Police, the Howard County Sheriff's Department, and Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
Central Booking is not a sentenced-inmate prison and is not the same as Jessup Correctional Institution or Patuxent Institution. It is the front door for local arrest processing. Arrestees are searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and processed before they see a District Court Commissioner for an initial hearing. After that hearing, the person may be released, held at the Detention Center, or continue through the criminal court process.
The Howard County facilities page shows Central Booking and the Detention Center as separate facility functions on the county corrections campus.
The official facility material confirms the booking role, but it does not provide a public search form for recent arrestees.
Howard County Central Booking Population
Howard County does not publish a separate Central Booking bed count in the current research. The county does describe the booking layout, including male and female sections with cells and holding areas, two suicide precaution cells, a control center, interview room, photo and fingerprint area, biographical information area, work area, property area, decontamination area, search area, supervisor's office, bathrooms, computer server room, employee break area, and initial hearing rooms. That design supports short-term intake, not long-term sentenced custody.
| Central Booking Area | What County Research Says |
|---|---|
| Holding areas | Male and female sections with cells and holding areas |
| Safety cells | Two suicide precaution cells |
| Identification | Photograph, fingerprint, and biographical information areas |
| Court link | Attached District Court Commissioner's Office and initial hearing rooms |
Search Howard County Central Booking
The correct first step for a new Howard County arrest is a phone call to Central Booking. No official county roster, recent booking report, or mugshot gallery was found, so a web search alone may miss the earliest custody stage. If the person has moved from booking into Detention Center housing, the main jail line is the better contact. If charges have been filed, Maryland Judiciary Case Search may show the court side of the arrest, but court records are not the same as custody confirmation.
- Call Howard County Central Booking at 410-313-5300 for a new arrest or intake-stage question.
- Have the person's full legal name, date of birth if known, arrest date, and arresting agency if known.
- If Central Booking says the person has been housed, call Howard County Detention Center at 410-313-5200.
- Use Maryland VINE for custody-status notifications when available.
- Use Howard County PIA for booking records or booking photographs not published online, subject to review.

Howard County Central Booking Contact
Central Booking uses the same street address as the county Detention Center campus, but it has its own phone number. Use it for a person who has just been arrested or whose first commissioner hearing may not have happened yet. For court records after the commissioner stage, use Maryland Judiciary Case Search and the Howard County court records request path as needed. For custody, do not rely on the sheriff's office as the jail operator; Howard County Department of Corrections runs the facility.

Howard County Booking Visits
Central Booking is an intake facility, so normal family and friend visitation is not the main service there. People are processed for search, fingerprints, photos, property, biographical data, and commissioner review. If the person remains in custody after the initial hearing, visitation follows Howard County Detention Center rules. County visitor material describes regular non-contact visits, and the current Corrections notice states that in-person visits are suspended from April 20, 2026 through June 30, 2026 for lobby renovations, with attorney visits allowed.
| Stage | Visit Status | Who to Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Central Booking intake | No general visit schedule found for intake | Call 410-313-5300 |
| Commissioner hearing stage | Initial hearing process, not a social visit | Central Booking or court commissioner process |
| Held at Detention Center | Regular non-contact visits subject to county rules | Call 410-313-5200 |
| April 20-June 30, 2026 | In-person visits suspended for lobby renovations, attorney visits permitted | Confirm with HCDC |
Howard County Booking Mail
Mail and commissary are generally Detention Center issues, not short-term Central Booking issues. Once a person is housed at HCDC, use the county mail processing address with Facility ID 5306 rather than the Waterloo Road street address. County research says Access Corrections handles deposits by internet and toll-free phone, the lobby kiosk accepts card and certain cash denominations, and money orders or cashier checks need prior Director or designee approval.

Howard County Booking Intake
Central Booking is the most important facility for understanding the first hours after a Howard County arrest. The arrestee is searched, fingerprinted, photographed digitally, and processed. Staff gather biographical information and handle property. The attached District Court Commissioner's Office allows the initial hearing process to occur at the intake campus. A commissioner may address release conditions or bond, while formal charges and later hearings appear in court systems after filing and docketing.
This distinction also affects mugshots. Howard County confirms that a digital photograph is taken and stored for identification purposes at Central Booking. The research did not locate an official public mugshot gallery or recent-bookings page. A booking photo can be requested under the Maryland Public Information Act, but the county or police records custodian may review, redact, or withhold records when privacy, investigatory, court-rule, or public-interest limits apply.
About Howard County Central Booking
Central Booking exists because Howard County moved arrest processing from the Police Department to Corrections in 2005. That move placed booking, commissioner review, and detention intake closer together on the Jessup corrections campus. The facility is especially relevant for families trying to find someone soon after arrest, when the person may not yet appear in court data and no county public roster exists.
Once a person is sentenced to Maryland state custody, Central Booking is no longer the right lookup path. Use the Maryland DPSCS incarcerated individual locator for state prisoners, and use federal or ICE systems for those separate custody types. The Howard County jail mugshots page explains the difference between a photo taken at booking and a photo published online.
Note: For a new arrest, call Central Booking first, then confirm any later housing move with the Detention Center.
